VSA Oxygen Generators - Specification
 
The new Air Products  VSA generators take the benefits of using oxygen in aquaculture a step further. The generators have been designed to be low maintenance and reliable systems, just what fish farmers need. The Air Products   new patented VSA (vacuum swing adsorption) generators offer benefits to the fish farmer, including:

No air compressor or air dryer is required, so operating and maintenance costs are reduced.

Oxygen technology has now become economical for most aquaculture operations, including ponds, raceways, re-circulation systems, flow through, hatchery operations, sea cages and net pens,  and leisure fisheries.
 
The generators in Air Products  product range are compact (see specifications), come skid mounted as standard, and can be easily trailer mounted for ease of manoeuvrability around  site. The generators simply need to plug into a power supply and you can start producing oxygen right away!

Air Products  VSA generators allow you to have your own independent oxygen supply, ideal for remote locations. Not only do they remove the management costs associated with traditional oxygen supplies, but also provide a predictable and economic long-term oxygen cost. The new range of Air Products  VSA generators will also help keep  costs under control and  productivity high.

VSA Oxygen Generators and aquaculture
Air Products  range of VSA oxygen generators have been designed specifically to meet the needs of the aquaculture industry and deliver affordable, reliable oxygen. Air Products  VSA generators are supplied in a single module (feed/vacuum blower, automatic valves, and a PLC control system). In the larger generators, a single adsorber vessel is free standing, as is the oxygen buffer tank.  In the smaller units all of this is integrated within the module. Various options are available to suit all power requirements. The generator can be skid- or trailer- mounted. For those applications where higher pressure oxygen is required, an oxygen booster compressor is supplied on a stand-alone skid. Each generator is packaged to simplify the generator's installation, such that it is literally plug and play.

VSA and PSA Generators
Most generators are of the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) type.  PSA generators produce oxygen from the sieve bed under pressures as high as 8 barg (116 psig), and the zeolite sieve is regenerated against ambient pressure. Such high pressures require the air to be compressed and dried.  Both of these processes have substantial power requirements, giving rise to high running costs.
Zeolite Contamination  Furthermore, the PSA process creates water condensation from the incoming compressed air and this can contaminate the zeolite sieve. If the compressed air supply to the PSA is from an oil injected screw compressor, (which usually are the most economic method of compressed air supply) then there is the added risk of oil contamination of the zeolite sieve. Another disadvantage of oil-injected compressors is that the condensate removed from the filtration system is contaminated with compressor oil and can present a hazardous waste disposal problem in some locations.

The Vacuum Swing Adsorption (VSA)  process produces oxygen at lower pressure of about 1.5 barg (this can be increased to ~3.5 barg by using a booster compressor)  and totally regenerates the sieve in a mild vacuum (0.5 barg). In a VSA generator the compressor can be replaced by a blower, meaning that capital and operating costs are reduced.
The overall costs of buying and operating a VSA generator are lower than PSA systems.
 
Clean Zeolite  While more affordable, VSA generation also reduces the probability of contamination of the zeolite bed, since it is a dry process; no water droplets are formed and any moisture present in the incoming air stays in the vapour phase.
 Simple Design Air Products '  newly patented VSA oxygen generators use a single electrically actuated four-way valve which is more reliable than pneumatic valves. So there is less to service and go wrong.
